Things to Do in St. Thomas, USVI: A Local's Guide

St. Thomas is the easiest US Virgin Island to get to — it's got the international airport and the cruise port — which means it's where a lot of first trips start. The good news: there's far more to do here than the postcard beach shot, and we'll walk you through both the classics and the stuff most visitors miss.

Here's how we'd map a great St. Thomas day, beaches and all, with the one thing we always tell friends to save room for at the end.

The "Need to Know" Basics:

If you only do a few things in St. Thomas: spend a morning at Magens Bay (one of the top 10 beaches in the Caribbean), wander historic Charlotte Amalie, snorkel at Coki Beach next to Coral World — and get out on the water for at least one day, because the best of the USVI is only reachable by boat. That last one is the difference between a nice trip and an unforgettable one.

The beaches (start here)

St. Thomas beaches are some of the best in the Caribbean, and they're all a little different:

  • Magens Bay — the famous one, and it earns it. A mile of white sand, calm clear water, a restaurant, chair rentals, even drink service near the sand. Small cash entry fee.
  • Coki Beach — clear water and so many fish you'll see them without a mask. Right next to Coral World Ocean Park, great for families.
  • Sapphire Beach — east-end blues that will stop you, with views across to St. John and no entrance fee.
  • Lindquist Beach — quieter, shady, good snorkeling, and you might spot a sea turtle or a horse from the nearby ranch.
  • Brewers Bay — a locals' beach loaded with sea turtles (no umbrellas allowed, to protect the nests), and conveniently past the airport for a last-day stop before your flight.

Beyond the beach

Ready for something past "beach, sun, repeat"?

Explore Charlotte Amalie. The historic harbor town is full of pastel buildings, old stone streets, and the kind of duty-free shopping the cruise crowd comes for. Worth a wander even if you don't buy a thing.

Take a Jeep tour to the local spots. A half-day off-road tour gets you to viewpoints and hidden corners most visitors never see — a more authentic angle on the island.

Visit Coral World. An easy, fun, family-friendly stop right next to Coki Beach if you want guaranteed sea life without a boat.

A common one-day plan

Enjoy the morning at the beach (Magens or Sapphire), spend a few hours in Charlotte Amalie, and then take some time to snorkel at Coki.

If you've only got one day and want the best of it, a half-day boat charter packs snorkeling, a floating-bar lunch, and hidden coves into a single afternoon.

The thing most visitors miss 🤫

Here's the honest local tip. Some of the best places around St. Thomas don't have parking lots or signs. You get to them by boat, or you don't get to them at all — hidden coves, reefs full of turtles, and floating spots you have to see to believe.

A single day on the water unlocks the stuff people talk about for years: snorkeling at Christmas Cove, a hot pizza delivered to your boat at Pizza Pi, the floating taco bar Lime Out over on St. John, sunset from the deck of a catamaran. Some guests make it a relaxed half-day; others build the whole trip around it. Either way, it's usually the day everyone remembers.

If you do one "activity" in St. Thomas beyond the beach, make it this.

How to think about your days

A simple rhythm that works: one slow beach day (Magens or Sapphire), one town-and-explore day (Charlotte Amalie plus a Jeep tour or Coral World), and one boat day out on the water. Mix snorkeling, lunch afloat, and a quiet cove into that last one and you've got the trip.

Let us build the water day

The beaches and town you can handle on your own. The boat day is where an expert opinion makes all the difference. Tell us your group size and what you're after — snorkeling, floating tacos, a sunset sail, a bit of everything — and we'll match you with a vetted captain who knows exactly where to go that day. You just show up.
