Best Time to Visit the USVI: A Season-by-Season Guide

Good news first: the US Virgin Islands are warm, sunny, and swimmable all year. The water never really gets cold, and there's no truly bad month. So "the best time to visit" really comes down to what *you* want — the calmest seas and liveliest scene, or fewer crowds and better prices.

Here's the honest season-by-season breakdown, plus the best window if a day on the water is the point of your trip.

Quick Hits:

Best weather and calmest seas: December–April. Peak season — also the busiest and priciest.

Best overall value: April–June. Mild, dry, lush, thinner crowds, better rates. Our pick for most people.
Warmest water, smaller crowds: Summer (June–August), with a chance of a passing shower.
Quietest and cheapest: September–October — the best deals, but the highest hurricane odds and some seasonal closures.

St. John — the snorkeling heart of the USVI

Over two-thirds of St. John is protected as Virgin Islands National Park, which means the water is clean, the reefs are healthy, and a lot of the coastline is wonderfully undeveloped.

Trunk Bay is the icon — its underwater snorkel trail has marked signs guiding you over the coral, which makes it perfect for first-timers and kids. Cinnamon Bay (my personal favorite) is the perfect choice if you are looking for calmer, mellow water for any skill level.

For turtles, head to Maho Bay — the most reliable turtle hangout on the island, with seagrass beds a short swim from shore. Francis Bay. just around the corner, gets you the same turtles with fewer people. And Salt Pond Bay on the quieter south end rewards a short downhill walk with calm water, turtles, and the occasional ray.

The Local Secret 🤫

The best St. John snorkeling isn't off the beach at all. Spots like Waterlemon Cay (that's 💦🍋 not 🍉), Flanagan Island near the BVI border, and Eagle Shoal — an underwater maze of coral canyons where you might see eagle rays and nurse sharks — are boat-only, and you'll often have them nearly to yourself.

There's even Tektite, a dramatic boulder-lined cove named for a 1960s NASA-Navy underwater research habitat that once sat there.

St. Thomas — easy access, big variety

Coki Beach on the northeast shore has clear, calm water right off the sand and gear rentals on site — easy snorkeling next door to Coral World. For something wilder, ask a captain about Cow and Calf Rocks off the south shore: underwater caverns and coral arches you can only reach by boat, and a favorite for the more adventurous.

A BVI bonus

Planning on adding the British Virgin Islands to your day trip? Two of the best snorkel stops anywhere are right off Norman Island: The Indians, a cluster of rocky islets over a vibrant reef, and The Caves, where you snorkel the cliff face and into three sea caves. (You'll need your passport for these — our capatains know how to get you through customs efficiently so you can maximize your turtle time.)

A couple of local tips

Float calmly above turtles and never touch them — stay quiet and they'll stick around, which gets you the better view anyway. Many boat-only spots sit close enough together to hit two or three in a single charter, so you're never locked into just one. And conditions change daily; a captain who knows these waters will pick the calm, clear spot for that day instead of the one that looked good last week.

Snorkel the spots most people miss

The reefs off the beach are great. The ones off the boat are unforgettable. Caribbean Boat Concierge can match you with a captain who knows where the water's clearest and where the turtles are *this* week — you can browse our site for both private charters or pre-planned group trips.

Our goal is to make sure you have the best experience in St.Thomas and St. John. Every recommendation, every adventure, and every moment is atestament to our dedication to sharing the magic of these islandswith the world.
