Norman Island, BVI: The Real Treasure Island Guide

Some Caribbean islands have a good beach. Norman Island has a pirate legend, a set of snorkel caves, and a floating bar — and it's a short boat ride from the US Virgin Islands. If you're planning a BVI day, this is one of the most rewarding stops you can make.

The "Need to Know" Basics:
  • Where: The southernmost of the main BVI, a short crossing across the Sir Francis Drake Channel from St. Thomas or St. John.
  • You need a passport. Norman Island is in the BVI — a different country from the USVI. Valid passport or passport card required, even for US citizens.
  • The highlights: The Caves at Treasure Point (snorkeling), The Indians (snorkeling), Pirate's Bight (beach-club lunch), and the famous Willy T floating bar.
  • The legend: It's widely cited as the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island — and it has real buried-treasure history to back it up.

The Real Treasure Island 🏴‍☠️

Norman Island didn't earn its pirate reputation by accident. Back in 1750, crew who mutinied off a Spanish galleon called the Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe are said to have buried their haul here — including 55 chests of silver coins.

That history (plus the caves and coves) is why it's so often pointed to as the island that inspired Treasure Island. Whether or not Stevenson had this exact spot in mind, it certainly feels the part.

The Caves at Treasure Point

This is the headliner. Three water-level sea caves cut into the base of the cliffs on the western edge of the island's main bay. You anchor offshore and snorkel along the rock face and into the caves, where coral and fish gather just below the surface. It's easy, fun, and friendly for all skill levels — many people call it some of the best snorkeling in the entire BVI.

The Indians

Just off the entrance to the island, four dramatic rock pinnacles — around 60 feet tall — rise straight out of the sea. Below them is a vibrant reef that drops into a deep wall, making it a spectacular snorkel when conditions cooperate. It's exposed, though, so your captain will only stop here on a calm day.

Pirate's Bight and The Bight

The island's main anchorage, The Bight, is a big, calm bay that's almost always dotted with sailboats. On shore sits Pirate's Bight, an open-air beach club serving upscale Caribbean dishes and plenty of fresh seafood, with a swim-friendly beach right out front. It's the natural lunch-and-relax stop between snorkels.

And anchored in the same bay is the Willy T, the BVI's most famous floating bar — a fun, lively stop with a story of its own. (We've got a whole guide to it.)

How to do it

Norman Island is a classic stop on a BVI day trip by boat. A great rhythm: snorkel The Caves (and The Indians if it's calm). The Caves are easy and great for all skill levels. The Indians are more exposed and best on calm days; a captain will decide whether conditions are right.

Then, stop for lunch at Pirate's Bight, and swing by the Willy T for a Painkiller before moving on toward Jost Van Dyke – or back home.

When you charter a private boat, you are able to set the pace yourself and linger where you want. This is the perfect option for first-timers or groups who need more flexibility in their day. Our captains are on these waters every day, they know the BEST spots to ensure your group has an amazing day on the water!
