Private vs. Shared Boat Charter in the USVI: How to Choose

March 21, 2026

How to Choose Between a Private or Shared Boat Charter in the USVI

A boat day is the best day of most USVI trips. The only real question is whether you want the boat to yourself.

Both shared and private charters can give you a great day on the water. They're just built for different kinds of trips. Here's the honest breakdown so you can pick the one that actually fits your group — no upsell, just how we'd explain it to a friend.

First things first:

Shared charter: you join a set group on a set route for a set price. Lower cost, less control. Great for solo travelers, couples, and anyone who's happy to go with the flow.

Private charter: the boat, captain, and day are yours. You set the pace, the stops, and the vibe. Costs more, but for groups and special occasions it's usually the better call.

If you're traveling with more than four or five people — or celebrating something — a private charter is almost always worth it. Read on for why.

Shared charters: easy and affordable

A shared (or group) charter puts you on a boat with other travelers, following a planned itinerary. You show up, the captain runs the route, and you split the experience with a handful of strangers who'll probably be lovely.

It's a good fit if you: are traveling solo or as a couple, want to keep costs down, and don't mind a fixed schedule or a fuller boat. You'll still see beautiful places — you just won't be the one deciding when to leave them.

The trade-offs: set departure times, a set route, and other people's preferences in the mix. If the group wants to leave the snorkel spot just as you're hitting your stride, that's the deal you signed up for.

Private charters: the day is yours

A private charter means the whole boat belongs to your group. You decide when you leave, where you stop, how long you linger, and what kind of day it is. Your captain reads the conditions and tailors the route — more snorkeling, more beach bars, a quieter cove, whatever you're after.

It's a good fit if you: are traveling as a group of six to twelve, bringing family or kids, celebrating a birthday or anniversary, or you simply want the freedom to make the day your own. Some guests want a full BVI adventure with five stops. Others just want a Painkiller and nowhere to be. On a private boat, both are correct.

The trade-offs: it costs more than a per-seat ticket. But split across a group, the per-person difference is often smaller than people expect — and the flexibility, privacy, and "we're not waiting on anyone" feeling is the whole reason it's worth it.

Within a private charter, you've still got options

Private doesn't have to mean fully crewed. A captained charter gives you a professional at the helm while your group relaxes — the most popular choice, and the one we recommend for most visitors. A fully crewed charter adds a chef and crew for a near all-inclusive day. When you hire a captain, plan on a daily captain rate plus a customary gratuity — we'll lay out the real numbers in our charter cost guide.

So Which Should You Book? 🤔

3 question gut check:

1. Solo or a couple, budget-minded, happy to go with the flow? A shared charter is a great day out.

2. Group of six-plus, a family, or celebrating something? Book the private charter. You'll thank yourself.

3. Want it to feel personal and unhurried no matter what? Private, every time.

The truth is most of our guests are planning a trip for a group, and they're the ones who feel the pressure to get it right. For them, a private charter takes the stress out — no coordinating around strangers, no rushing, just your people and the water.
